The Sun and the moon
The Sun and the moon, Armenian folk ballad retold by Armenian writer H. Tumanyan in 1887.
This is a story about a woman who was living in a castle with her two children. The older girl Sun and the youngest boy Moon. One day while kneading the dough, the woman called both of her children and told them that one of them should lighten the day up and the other one should lighten up the night.
Moon, the boy, wanted to lighten up the day, but Sun, the girl, was too scared to go outside at night time. The mother explained to Moon that he should give his sister the daytime, but he was stubborn and didn't agree to give it up.
And at that moment mother gave him a slap across his face with her hand fully covered with dough. Moon got hurt, turned around and left. From that day Moon has dough all over his face.
Then mother gave very sharp needles to Sun so that people couldn't even look at Sun because of her sharp needle-like rays.
And soon brother and sister started their shifts lightening all days and nights up. However they missed each other terribly and God decided to give them one hour to see each other. Throughout that one hour brother and sister stayed in each other's arms, and there was no light at all for people.
